Coverage Not Included in Medicare Part A and Part B

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called “Medigap,” helps cover what Original Medicare (Parts A & B) doesn’t, and it is sold by private insurance providers. In other words, it fills the gaps in Original Medicare, hence the name “Medigap.” It also can provide coverage for some or all remaining costs associated with Parts A & B:

  • Deductibles
  • Coinsurance
  • Copayments

7 Must-Knows

  • You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.
  • A supplement – or Medigap – policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. These plans provide Medicare benefits, while Medigap supplements your benefits from Part A and Part B.
  • You pay the Medigap provider a monthly premium in addition to paying for your Part B premium you pay to Medicare.
  • Medicare Supplement plans cover a single individual. Each person, whether spouse or no, has to pay for a separate policy.
  • Whether you have health problems or not, any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable as long as you’re paying the premium.
  • After 2006, Medigap insurance are no longer allowed to cover prescription drug expenses. For prescription drug coverage, see Medicare Prescription Plans.
  • It’s illegal to sell a supplement plan to anyone with a Medicare Advantage Plan unless they plan to switch to Original Medicare.
